Mattress basis (bed frame) is one of the most important elements of the bed. Usually the seller gives you such a great amount of information about the mattress itself, that the data concerning such an essential element like the basis is simply not assimilated. And still upon the bed frame depends much of the level of comfort, effectiveness, as well as the life time of the mattress.
A basic solution for any bed basis is a straight, firm frame with feet.
The sizes (height and width) of the frame should be the same or should go a bit beyond the sizes of the mattress. If the frame has no feet with the adjustable height, the frame should be set in an ideally straight, horizontal position. If the frame is big (140õ200 cm or more), check if it, full loaded, remains elastic and his parts are not exposed to deformation.
As an optimal solution specialists recommend the frames constructed on the basis of blades (lamellae) –transversal wooden bars from flexible wood. Thus kind of frames are especially created for the orthopedic mattresses, providing the necessary point support and ventilation. Trying to emphasize on their special role and construction, many manufactures call them “orthopedic frames”.
A key parameter of an orthopedic bed frame is the width of the blades and the free space between them. The optimal values in this context depend on the type and size of the mattress, so each and every bed frame should be chosen according to a particular mattress.
The main rule one should take into consideration while choosing a basis for a spring mattress – the blades should be wider then the diameter of a separate spring, while the space between them should be narrower, should be less than that diameter. This is necessary in order to avoid the dropping of the springs in the spaces between the blades, most important in the case of spring mattresses with spring blocks of standard density (200-300 springs /m2). For the mattresses on the basis of spring blocks of increased density, also known as Multipocket-systems, the second half of the rule is not strictly compulsory, the springs in such blocks are small in diameter and are elastically joined to each other. You can always ask the seller for a detailed instruction, concerning the required parameters of the bed frame, for a specific mattress.
It is acceptable to use continuous frames form pressed wood fiber board, but in this case the ventilation of the mattress worsens – it may be ventilated and turned upside-down more often. One can even use the floor instead of a bed frame, but this may be just a temporary solution, because sleeping at less than 30 centimeters above the floor, where the air is mostly cold enough and there is plenty of dust, it’s not so good for one’s health. Adjustable bed frames with a complex geometrical structure and lifting mechanisms are entirely acceptable, but in this case there are several additional requirements as to the mattress. For instance, with this kind of frames it’s not recommended to use mattress on the basis of coco coir – the coir is a pretty fine material, very sensitive to deformations while curving or bending the mattress. The best solution in this case would be to use mattresses on the basis of latex monolith or foam urethane.
It is absolutely inacceptable to use bed frames that are not solid enough, or straight enough, those which cave or are unstable. You also can’t use 2 bed frames in combination with one mattress. Be aware that doing this you can cause a deformation of the mattress, and your sleep will become significantly less comfortable and productive. Furthermore, it can even you’re your health.
Take care of a frame for your mattress and your mattress will take care of you!
